English Language Lab Asturias

posted by María Valdés

English Language Lab Asturias (ELLA) is the name of the project I’ve been involved in for the last few months. The ELLA team is small, just three of us, all teachers at EOIs: Carmen López, from the EOI of Mieres and chief editor of the project, Javier Menéndez, from the EOI of Luarca, and me, at the moment working in the EOI of Oviedo.

The project intends to provide online resources for teachers and students of English, particularly for those in English courses for young people aged 18-30 organized by the local government of education of Asturias in collaboration with the Ministry of Education of Spain. But the idea is that it may also be useful for anyone interested in practising English using computers.

Have a look at it and let us know what you think! I hope you enjoy using the activities as much as we did creating them!

  1. Good morning.
I’ve been watching the “Their first phone cell phone” video and doing the test.
I think there is a mistake in question #2, according to what (“what” or “that”, María?) I heard and the trascript:
The right answer should be C, whereas the key is B.
In my opinion, giving cell phones to kids younger than 12 is crazy.
They all are usually accompanied by adults who are the ones that should be calling whoever in the case something happened.
I believe kids should be developing their social skills in order to be with other kids and not with machines such as phones, videoconsoles, or computers.
Football or chess should be much better for them at that age.
In addition, they should be also developing their sense of autonomy. And feel being well cared after even though there is no direct connection with their closest relatives. They will have to learn to trust sooner or later, and to recognize who they can or cannot trust.

    And once I’ve said this…

I think your work is great!!!!
I find it useful, funny, and well organized by stages and categories.
    Well done!!!!!

    See you.

  2. Hi Cristina!
You were right about the mistake, and I have already corrected it. Thanks a lot for spotting it, and for telling us about it. And thanks for your words of encouragement too!
